This week we were asked to write a response to Helen Armstrong’s article “Graphic Design Theory?”
In this article Armstrong questions how “technology alters our aesthetics even as we struggle against it”. So what does that mean? Well the author essentially summarizes how today’s technology and accessibility of this technology allows anyone to be creative to some degree. This gives the average person more power to be creative with a lesser need of a professional input. This can lead consumers to being accustom to a certain style limiting creative aesthetics due to “remixability” because the technology is available. It’s a “do it yourself” mentality which we have also seen in interior design with networks like HGTV. Under these circumstances at which point does someone ask for “out of the box” concepts? I believes it comes down to the economy. With less than ideal financials how does a company determine the need for innovative concepts? What essentially happens in these circumstances is repurposing a current concept is often visited.
